CCW Course Syllabus

CONCEALED FIREARMS PERMIT COURSE SYLLABUS


COURSE DESCRIPTION – This course meets and exceeds the requirements to obtain a concealed carry permit in the State of California. This course takes a minimum of four hours to a maximum of 16 hours (per California law) and covers all of the following topics.


  1. LEGAL ISSUES

  1. Textbook – “How to Own a Gun & Stay Out of Jail: What You Need to Know About the Law If You Own a Gun or Are Thinking of Buying One, California Edition.”

  3. LAWS

i. California Penal Code Sections: 197-198, 417, 240-242, 245, 26150, 26155, 26180, 26150, 26155, 26180, 25100 - 25140, 12035 (Justifiable use of deadly force, CCW laws, exceptions, revocations/restrictions, false applications, locations where you can not carry, negligent storage, and civil liability)

2.  COMMON SENSE AND RESPONSIBILITY

            A. Avoid confrontations, and do not show off

            B. Only draw a weapon when it is lawful, and you are likely to use it

                        i. Escalation and de-escalation

                        ii. Premature draw may escalate a confrontation

                        iii. Alcohol/drugs and guns do not mix

                        iv. Last or only option available (otherwise, be a good witness)

3. LAW ENFORCEMENT CONTACTS

            A. Vehicle contacts

i. Hands on steering wheel and lights on

ii. Calmly inform officer you are licensed, armed, and location of weapon

iii. DO NOT expose weapon, reach for permit, or take hands off steering

      wheel unless told to do so

            B. Pedestrian – Hands open, palms up, and numbers ii and iii above

            C. What to do if you have been involved in an incident where you drew or fired

     your weapon

4. UNIVERSAL FIREARMS SAFETY RULES

            A. Treat every weapon as if it is ALWAYS loaded!

            B. NEVER let the muzzle cross/cover anything you are not ready and willing to destroy

            C. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you are

                 ready to fire

  1. ALWAYS know your target and it’s background

  2. NEVER place your weapon where anybody else (child, or other) can obtain it

5. EQUIPMENT

            A. Weapon choice and methods of carry

6. WEAPON MANIPULATION

            A. Loading, un-loading, and chamber check

            B. Proper presentation (draw) and holster

7. LIVE FIRE TRAINING

A. Six fundamentals of marksmanship (Stance, grip, breathing, sight

     alignment/sight picture, trigger control, follow through)

            B. Single rounds, controlled pairs, and failure drills

            C. Tactical loading and speed re-loading

            D. Malfunction clearing

8. QUALIFICATION

A. Minimum standards course – 3yard line, 2 rounds in 5 seconds (repeat); 7 yard

    line (same drill); 10 yard line (same drill); 15 yard line, 2 rounds in 10 seconds 

    (repeat)

                        i. ALL rounds must be on B27 or IPSIC type target

            B. Written score

                        i. Must pass by a minimum of 80%

            C. Students MUST demonstrate the following to pass course: proper weapon 

    manipulation/gun handling skills, mindset, and marksmanship skills
